Vincent Irizarry Speaks on Soap Opera Stops

Vincent Irizarry is a soap opera veteran... of numerous soap operas.

The well-traveled actor recently spoke to Soap Opera Digest about leaving All My Children and joining The Young and the Restless (he's since returned to AMC):

On Being Fired From All My Children in 2006: "Leaving gave me the opportunity to go out to California, do something different, then come back and do it again. So it was okay."

On Living Bicoastally While Playing David on The Young and the Restless: "It turned into 22 months that I was there total. I would do four days here, five days there, three days here, three days there.... They were very good about accommodating me, so I was very grateful. [To stay in touch with me family] we did phone calls every day, and toward the end, we set up a webcam.

I would talk to the production company about special events. I only had to take the red-eye once, to get back home for my son's birthday party. I was sort of a zombie by the end of the day, but there was no way I would have missed it. We made the best of it. The kids loved coming out to visit me. I brought each of my children out indvidually so we could have special, quality time, just the two of us."

Vincent Irizarry: Excited for All My Children Return

How does newly axed The Young and the Restless star Vincent Irizarry feel about returning to All My Children?

Not too shabby, based on a recent quote he gave to Soap Opera Weekly.

“I’ve started to watch the show again, and my daughter looks different! It’s amazing what a year and a half will do. I’m excited [to be back]. Toward the end, [ex-head writer] Megan [McTavish] had lost her footing with the character, but for the better part of nine years, David was one of the best characters on daytime.”

Vincent Irizarry: Back on All My Children

Vincent Irizarry - who recently wrapped up his stint as David Chow on The Young and the Restless - will return to the role of Dr. David Hayward on All My Children later this year.

The doctor (ex-lover of Erica and Krystal, father to Babe, and nemesis of numerous Pine Valley citizens) made his All My Children debut in 1998 and skipped town in November 2006 when the popular vetern was given his walking papers.

An Interview with Vincent Irizarry

The Young and the Restless' David Chow has proven to be a powerhouse schemer, but is he a straight-up baddie?

Not even Vincent Irizarry knows what his character is capable of.

"At this point, I haven't made a decision about it," Irizarry told Soap Opera Digest. "Victor thinks David's bad because he's been married three times, and two of his wives died and one was a divorce with a hefty settlement. David could just be unlucky in love."

PerhapsÂ…but there was also that time he splashed Nikki's stripper footage all over the Web, then joined her campaign, only to ruin it by planting a kiss on her! Add to that his attempts to drive Dru crazy with Carmen's double, not to mention his somehow getting his hands on the footage that landed Phyllis behind bars.

Clearly David's a player, but Irizarry still hedges about just how rotten he actually might be.

"For now, I leave it to the imagination of the audience, so that we can throw them off if they're not accurate," he said, but truth be told, his guarded theories may not be accurate, either. "I didn't know where this role was going to go when I signed on, and I still don't."

For now, he's enjoying the cozy space between Nikki and David. "There is definitely more romance on the horizon, and obviously, more romantic moments with Nikki will build the conflict between Victor and David," he notes. "It's exciting. I love working with Eric (Braeden). I worked with him years ago and have known him for many years, so it's a treat."

As the guys duke it out over Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott), Irizarry hopes David continues to walk the line.

"Typically I'd prefer a character that's not a goody-two-shoes and has shades of gray," he said. "I just don't want to become a one-dimensional villain. When the character is multidimensional, you can't wait to open the next script to see what you're doing next."
