Michael Gross Dishes on Joining The Young and the Restless

River

Michael Gross has become a regular on The Young and the Restless. He plays the character of River.

How did the acting veteran come aboard the number-one rated soap opera on TV? He told Soap Opera Weekly about it.

Soap Opera Weekly: How did you end up on The Young and the Restless?
Michael Gross: The show approached me, as they did several other actors, about coming and doing this role. There was frankly nothing on paper. It was an idea. They came to me and said, "Here's this man. We think we know something about him. We'd like to tell you what we think. We'd like to find out from you if you'd be interested in playing him."

There was nothing to read. There was no audition, per se. This is a man and character that's being created even as we speak. We create him as we go along, which is actually quite exciting. It's like building the first automobile. I feel like Henry Ford, saying, "Will this work?" Each episode is another point in the assembly line.

The Young and the Restless Casting Update: More on Michael Gross

Michael Gross PicAs previously reported, formerly Family Ties patriarch Michael Gross will be appearing on The Young and the Restless. We now have a bit more information on the role Gross will be playing:

The character's name is River Baldwin and he's a former Vietnam-era activist who was connected to a group of student terrorists.

So far, viewers have been led to believe that River — the missing dad of Michael Baldwin (Christian LeBlanc) — was a drifter, druggie and draft dodger who abandoned Michael and his mother, Gloria (Judith Chapman), fleeing to Canada.

"But the truth is not so black and white," The Young and the Restless head writer Maria Arena Bell told TV Guide. "In trying to track down his father, Michael fears he's going to find a very amoral guy. What he ends up finding is someone totally unexpected."

Adds the actor himself:

"River is a very different character than you're accustomed to seeing on a soap — it's like he's from another planet. He was part of a political movement that greatly affected his family. Now he'll be forced to examine the choices he made."

Gross will portray Lowell Baldwin, an old flame of Gloria (Judith Chapman) and deadbeat dad of defense attorney extraordinaire Michael (Christian LeBlanc).
