Kimberly McCullough Dishes on General Hospital, 45 Years Young

General Hospital ResidentWith General Hospital celebrating its 45th birthday today, TV Guide Canada talked with longtime star Kimberly McCullough about her time on the show...

TVG: General Hospital is celebrating 45 years — what’s been your favourite storyline so far?
KM: Jason getting amnesia.

TVG: Looking back, Robin was a lively, charming, and funny kid. As an adult, she’s lost her sense of humour…
KM: I don’t know why. The writers got it in their minds that Robin should be a stick-in-the-mud. I don’t know where they got that idea, but alas, that’s been the reality since I’ve returned to the show.

TVG: Well, to be fair, Robin was an orphan, contracted HIV, buried her boyfriend, and now she’s dating a louse, albeit a sexy one! Heck, I’d be in rehab by now.
KM: [laughs] Yeah, but you know it’s also because she’s a serious student. Robin needs to be in control because as a child she had such a turbulent childhood.

TVG: Head writer Bob Guza has kept the HIV thread alive throughout Robin’s storyline and now that she’s pregnant — I have to say it’s the only storyline in daytime, in recent memory, that is truly groundbreaking. Do you think GH will continue to write this story responsibly?
KM: I certainly hope so. I saw Guza a couple of days ago and he said he’s been talking to the Center for Disease Control. He’s finding out what kind of pregnancies she could experience — and all the possibilities that are available. GH is responsible in the sense that they want to educate the public about having a baby for an HIV-positive woman.

At the same time, Bob doesn’t want the whole storyline to be all about the HIV aspect, because it would also be irresponsible to say that HIV defines a person. People with HIV have full lives. It’s a manageable disease.

Kimberly McCullough Shares Favorite General Hospital Story of 2007, More

Kimberly McCullough PhotoKimberly McCullough has seemingly spent her entire life in front of a soap opera camera. She debuted at the age of 7.

Now, of course, the character of Robin Scorpio is pregnant on General Hospital. She recently recounted her top five moments in show history. Here's her favorite story from 2007:

"I liked the very first girls' night out. It was the Patrick fantasy scenes where Becky (Herbst, Elizabeth), Natty (Livingston, Emily), Minae Noji, Kelly, Kent King, Lainey and I all got to make out with Jason Thompson. That was so great. It was the first time I got to really work with all of the girls at once.

We all got together in my dressing room that morning and started to run lines. That's how we really started to bond as friends in real life. It was from that moment. I remember we all went out to lunch, after we did the scenes. Jason was the only guy there. It was hilarious.

He was sitting there with five women that he just made out with. We were teasing him, asking him who was the best kisser and really giving him a hard time. He was like, 'Somehow I feel like I should just buy lunch.' And he did."

Kimberly McCullough Speaks on General Hospital: Night Shift

Last week, General Hospital: Night Shift began its summer run. Among those pulling double duty on this show and the daytime classic, General Hospital, is Kimberly McCullough.

TV Guide recently talked with the actress about it:

TVGuide.com: How do you like starring in a primetime series?
Kimberly McCullough: I'm having a lot of fun. It's always great to do something different.

Kimberly McCulloughTVGuide.com: What's the basic premise of Night Shift?
McCullough: Robin Scorpio and Patrick Drake (Jason Thompson) operate on a guy who doesn't have insurance. So Dr. Ford gets really angry and decides to punish them by making them work on the night shift. Most of the characters are people the General Hospital fans will already know. Some of the newer characters, like the nurses and doctors, were recently introduced on GH. A couple of them will be totally new, like Billy Dee Williams, who plays the janitor. But you don't need to watch GH to follow this show.

TVGuide.com: Robin doesn't usually get to be so sex kittenish. Was that a kick for you?
McCullough: Yeah, except on the show I'm mostly wearing scrubs. People might watch the show and go, "Wait, where's the hot girl who's on those billboards?" In the very first episode, you do see me and Jason Thompson making out in the locker-room shower. The whole idea of Night Shift is that everything happens on the night shift in the hospital. On the other GH, some of the action takes place in the hospital, but most of it is outside.

TVGuide.com: Give us a preview of what you do on Night Shift that's different from the daytime GH.
McCullough: I feel like we do a lot more medical stuff! I get to interact with patients who aren't necessarily General Hospital vets. I like that because I get to connect with different actors on a weekly basis.

TVGuide.com: I hear Robin's thinking of having a baby, which is complicated by her HIV-positive status?
McCullough: Honestly, it's not complicated by her HIV status at all. That's more of a societal judgment that's put on people with HIV. Robin's stance is that it shouldn't keep anyone from having a baby; the chances are very minimal that the child would [be born with] HIV. I don't know if a lot of people know that, but part of the story is getting that message out there.

TVGuide.com: Good to know. That's very interesting.
McCullough: Robin's desire to have a baby is really more complicated by her relationship status than her HIV status. Robin is always concerned that Patrick isn't even ready for a relationship, since he's always flirting with other women!

If he's not ready to be a one-woman man, how can he be a father? At one point, Patrick actually says — on General Hospital, not on Night Shift — that he never wants to have kids. So that could complicate things for them. [Laughs]
