Judith Chapman Speaks to TV Guide Canada

Judith Chapman recently sat down with TV Guide Canada to discuss her role on The Young and the Restless.

Here are excerpts from the interview:

TV Guide: Do you have any ideas regarding Gloria’s future on the show?

Judith Chapman: Gloria wants true power. She could care less about landing another rich husband. She’s already married into power, so I think she wants to earn authentic power on her own. I’m hoping Gloria moves into the power position with her fabulous sons.

TV Guide: Did you like the karmic beat Gloria recently experienced? Heck —Gloria even toned down her over-the-top image for a while there!
Judith Chapman: Once again, I ran with that and worked with our costume designer to tone Gloria’s look down. There were a couple of days when I think we went too far with that dowdy look, so now we have more of a realistic balance between her over-the-top fashion sense, and her cathartic look. But God forbid Gloria loses her fashion flare…

Judith Chapman Featured in Newspaper

The Cornwall Standard Freeholder recently featured Judith Chapman in an article. Here's an excerpt from the story about this The Young and the Restless star:

Judith Chapman Tired of banging her head against Hollywood's thick brick walls due to subtle forms of ("non-existent") discrimination facing all film and television actresses over 40, Judith Chapman packed up her makeup and most of her belongings and moved 125 miles east to the spectacular desert setting of Palm Springs, Calif., in 1991.

She never regretted the stunning change of venue and the adoption of a new lifestyle, which included teaching drama at College of the Desert for several semesters, plus starring in, directing and producing plays at the local Palm Canyon Theater. But 13 years later, she discovered that she was "getting a little weary" of the desert. Simply, her small corner of the vast Mojave Desert was not enough.

"Something was calling me away and I told my partner, James (St. James), that if got a job in Vancouver, I would probably take it," said Chapman, 62, over a light lunch at the Vineyard Tuscan Grill, the downtown Palm Springs bistro she helps operate with restaurateur St. James when time permits.

Striking, she is slim and trim in a loose pink sweater, tight blue jeans and a wide-brimmed straw hat pulled down almost to her blue eyes.

"Then I received a call out of the blue from my agent, saying an actress on the soap 'The Young and the Restless' wanted out and a replacement was needed," she recalled.

Judith Chapman Speaks on Film Festival

Judith Chapman PictureJudith Chapman recently attended the Palm Springs Classic Film Festival.

As a Desert Hot Springs resident, The Young and the Restless, star saw the the fan fest as a treat.

"I'm actually seeing people I haven't seen in years," she told The Desert Sun between greeting and chatting with fans at her booth.

Chapman, who is a co-owner of The Vineyard Tuscan Grill in Palm Springs, was eager to participate when she was approached by the organizers of Starfair.

"I so wanted to do it," she said. "I said I'd bring The Young and the Restless stuff, but what I really wanted to do was promote my play ('Catonsville 9.') Everyone was so positive, I was impressed."

Judith Chapman Dishes on Benefit Performance

Judith Chapman is excited about her latest project.

"It's a one-time benefit performance with an all-star soap cast," The Young and the Restless star told Soap Opera Digest.

Judith Chapman Photo"[They] include Christian LeBlanc, Vincent Irizarry, Michelle Stafford, Kristoff St. John, Greg Rikaart, Daniel Goddard and Emily O'Brien, John Callahan (ex-Edmund) from All My Children, and Ron Hale (Mike) from General Hospital. We’re doing a staged reading of The Trial of the Catonsville 9, the true story of a group of nuns, priests and laypeople who burned draft cards in protest of the Vietnam War in the late '60s."

Chapman took action after seeing The Actors' Gang's all-star reading of the play, which was led by Martin Sheen and Tim Robbins in Los Angeles this past August.

"It was such a moving story and it's timely 40 years later," she said.

A talk with Robbins later and Chapman was set on producing Catonsville — and raising some money, of course — with a star-studded cast of her peers.

"I've always had a fantasy of having an annual soap opera theater benefit, so this is the pilot project," she said. "Proceeds go to Kiva, an organization that facilitates micro-loans to small businesses in the developing world. These priests and nuns worked with the working poor around the country, so Kiva seemed like a natural choice."

The event promises to be entertaining, and if all goes well, may only be the first: "This is a play that could be taken around the country," Chapman added. "I love theater, and as Greg Rikaart put it, 'I’m going to feed my soul!'"

Judith Chapman: Excited About Restuarant Face-Lift

Judith Chapman is is excited about an Italian face-lift this summer... for her restaurant in Palm Springs, that is!

"After 25 years, my man James figured he could redecorate, so the old St. James is closed and we're opening a brand-new, fabulous restaurant, Vineyard Tuscany Grill," Chapman told Soap Opera Digest. "It's the same location, but we're transforming it."

Judith Chapman The first change will be the look.

"Though St. James wasn't an India restaurant, it had an India ashram look," Chapman said. "We're replacing the arches and fountains, and transforming it into a Tuscan villa. I haven't been home for three weeks, but James has already started the renovations, so I'll be pestering him. 'I think we should do it this way!' "

The long-time The Young and the Restless actress is sure to have an opinion on the food, too, but doesn't anticipate having any objections to the new menu.

"We're in business with the Italians!" she cheers. "We're going into partnership with Chef Mario Marfia, who worked for Robert De Niro's restaurant Ago and other fabulous places in Los Angeles, and the front man of Ago South Beach, Davide (Alessandrini). Mario's from Sicily and Davide's from Sardinia. It's our favorite food and it's going to be brilliant."

The best thing about the partnership is that Chapman will have more time with her man.

"James hasn't been in the kitchen for a long time, but he oversees everything," she said. "Now, he wants to slowly move to the background while someone else takes over, so we can spend more time together, with less of the headaches and responsibilities of day-to-day management and just relax."

After a quarter of a century, he's already getting started. "I just called him and he was at Mario's tiny restaurant in Palm Desert," Chapman said. "I said, 'It sounds like a wonderful life,' and he said, 'Oh, it is!' "
