A Brief General Hospital Casting Change

For four future General Hospital episodes, Dr. Patrick Drake will look quite different.

That's because Jason Thompson will exit the role for a few days, leaving it in the capable hands of Ethan Erickson (pictured, formerly on Guiding Light). Look for the recasting to begin on April 23, with Jason making his return to the role on May 2.

Dylan Cash: Let Go from General Hospital

Dylan Cash PhotoYoung star Dylan Cash has been let go from General Hospital.

Cash's character was accidentally shot by a bullet meant for his father, Sonny Corinthos, earlier this month. According to a source close to the actor, Cash didn't see the ousting coming.

During his six years with the show, Cash earned numerous awards, including a 2003 Young Artist Award in the Best Performance in a TV Series by a Young Actor Ten or Younger category.

Becaue it's unlikely the show would kill off a child, General Hospital spoilers state the character is expected to remain in a coma for awhile. From there, there's speculation that Michael will be "aged," emerging from his unconscious state as a young adult.

If the show does move forward with plans to recast Michael, former As the World Turns Jesse Lee Soffer (ex-Will Munson) is believed to be a leading candidate for the part.

  • Jerry advances on Ian (Seamus Dever)... with murder on his mind.
  • Robin stops going out with Patrick.

General Hospital Writer Addresses Gun Controversy

Gun PlayOn last Friday’s General Hospital, Michael Corinthos III - the 12-year-old son of local mob kingpin Sonny - was accidentally shot in the head.

Even on a show known for violence, the shooting of a child had to be a risky move. Right, head writer Bob Guza Jr.? He told Entertainment Weekly that it plays into a larger theme he wants to promote.

''We've been accused before of glorifying violence,'' Guza said. ''But we always try to show the consequences. We do deal with mobsters. We can't just have them importing illegal tchatchkes from the Far East and getting a slap on the wrist. You've got to deal with the fact that they kill people and people are killed all around them.''

Guza replied to a pair of burning questions, as well:

Will the show will use the shooting as an opportunity to age up Michael and replace 13-year-old Dylan Cash?
Guza (who is keeping mum on Michael's fate) doesn't believe he's necessarily locked into keeping Cash playing Michael forever, but he does say that having the same actor play a character straight through from childhood raises the dramatic potential (just look at Kimberly McCollough's Robin).

Does this mean the end of the mob violence? Is this the start of kinder, gentler General Hospital?
''We're not going to make them all go in the garment business. That is not what this story is about. The show is about romance during wartime, for lack of a better term. We have the highest stakes possible because people can be killed. We're not going to ignore that. We're not going to go away from that. But we're going to make them very, very aware of the consequences and make them try to deal in nonviolent ways.''

Seamus Dever Speaks on Life at General Hospital

Our pals at BuddyTV recently spoke with General Hospital star Seamus Dever. Here are excerpts from the interview:

Seamus Dever How did you end up becoming part of this show?
I had actually tested. I'm kind of one of these actors who has been around a long time, and have made fans out there, a lot of casting people and producers. The story of my life is that I'm generally the second choice for things. I tested for something for General Hospital like five -- no, four years ago now. I came very close and everyone loved me, just not for the part, but they loved me. I hear that a lot.

"You're great, but not for this part." And so they kind of kept me in mind, and this part came up for Ian Devlin. They had written it, and Mark Teschner, the casting director told me that they're like, "You know who would be great for this? Seamus." And he's like, "You better just offer it to him. Don't even make him audition for it." So that's what they did.

We're wondering how a renowned doctor is also a trained assassin?
I have been wondering that myself. Well, they're both good with their hands. They have to have good eyesight and patience. There's a lot of parallels between being a doctor, particularly a surgeon, and an assassin. Both need precision timing. It surprised me, it threw me for a loop when I read that. I was like, "What, wait a minute. I'm gonna kill Sonny? Wait a minute, how did this happen?" I'd like to know a definite answer too.

The character who's going to take out Sonny must ruffle the feathers of the General Hospital fans. Have you read the fan reactions to Ian online at all?
I confess I do, only because I've never been on a show where I get that kind of instantaneous feedback. I do a lot of theater, so you get the feedback from the critics, and with any kind of criticism you have to take the good and you have to take the bad. There's a bunch of good Ian criticism out there, and there's a bunch of bad Ian criticism out there.

And then the fact that the child's involved. I think there's going to be something that kind of comes out with a child being involved, something in Ian's past where it's just instant regret. Something involving a child, I think that's all I can say.

Kimberly McCullough Dishes on General Hospital, 45 Years Young

General Hospital ResidentWith General Hospital celebrating its 45th birthday today, TV Guide Canada talked with longtime star Kimberly McCullough about her time on the show...

TVG: General Hospital is celebrating 45 years — what’s been your favourite storyline so far?
KM: Jason getting amnesia.

TVG: Looking back, Robin was a lively, charming, and funny kid. As an adult, she’s lost her sense of humour…
KM: I don’t know why. The writers got it in their minds that Robin should be a stick-in-the-mud. I don’t know where they got that idea, but alas, that’s been the reality since I’ve returned to the show.

TVG: Well, to be fair, Robin was an orphan, contracted HIV, buried her boyfriend, and now she’s dating a louse, albeit a sexy one! Heck, I’d be in rehab by now.
KM: [laughs] Yeah, but you know it’s also because she’s a serious student. Robin needs to be in control because as a child she had such a turbulent childhood.

TVG: Head writer Bob Guza has kept the HIV thread alive throughout Robin’s storyline and now that she’s pregnant — I have to say it’s the only storyline in daytime, in recent memory, that is truly groundbreaking. Do you think GH will continue to write this story responsibly?
KM: I certainly hope so. I saw Guza a couple of days ago and he said he’s been talking to the Center for Disease Control. He’s finding out what kind of pregnancies she could experience — and all the possibilities that are available. GH is responsible in the sense that they want to educate the public about having a baby for an HIV-positive woman.

At the same time, Bob doesn’t want the whole storyline to be all about the HIV aspect, because it would also be irresponsible to say that HIV defines a person. People with HIV have full lives. It’s a manageable disease.

Anthony Geary Reflects on General Hospital Experience

General Hospital celebrates its 45th birthday today. And that's no April Fool's joke.

Recently, veteran actor Anthony Geary spoke to Entertainment Weekly about his life on the series...

Entertainment Weekly: Did you have any idea at the beginning that your character would take on the life that it did?
Anthony Geary: No. [Laughs] I first came on to do 13 weeks and that was all I expected to do. It just sort of grew out of that. For a while, after being on for the first five years, I was really anxious to get off and do other things. And I found out that the impact was such that it was difficult to do much else.

Anthony Geary Image

When I finally came back in '91, I came back as Luke's cousin [Bill Eckert] because I didn't want to play Luke. That really didn't work. The audience didn't want to see him and I was unhappy with that character, so we brought Luke back in 1993. And I've been very grateful for it ever since because it's been a very good ride.

EW: What have been your favorite arcs for the character?
Geary: Oh, jeez. There've been so many good ones. I always remember the very first Luke and Laura runaway as being really special. That is when they were married. It was after the rape and he'd stolen her away from Baldwin and they'd spent the summer together trying to solve the mystery of the left-handed boy and the black book, plus Frank Smith's mob.

That story was really special to me. It was full of all kinds of surprises and twists and turns. There was a cross-dressing hitman chasing us. We did a lot of location shots at that time. It was really the high point of General Hospital as far as I'm concerned. We were breaking the mold.

No word yet on how long Hughes will be sticking around this time.
