Eileen Davidson Dishes on Writing Career

Earlier this month, Eileen Davidson released "Death in Daytime." It's her first paperback soap opera mystery novel.

The actress spoke to CBS about the novel:

CBS.com: How did you become interested in writing?
Eileen Davidson: Oh gosh, well a long time ago I was writing in high school and college and I got some really good feedback about it but it was always in the back of my head as something I wanted to do. You know the first computer I got I considered writing children's books, but I was always pretty busy and just never found the time to do it. What happened was that my husband was approached to write a book about the poker world, a murder mystery with an author by the name of Robert Randese, he's a prolific mystery writer and they wrote a book together.

Robert lives in Missouri so he'd fly to California for a week or two at a time. One night he was over for dinner and I said we should do something around the soap opera world and he said he'd love to. A couple months later I followed it up and called him and asked if he was serious, he said absolutely and asked if I had any ideas. So I wrote up my ideas and we presented it to Penguin and we got a two book deal. So that's how it happened.

Eileen Davidson Speaks on Return to The Young and the Restless

As soap opera fans know - and are excited about! - Eileen Davidson is going back to The Young and the Restless.

The actress spoke with TV Guide Canada about the move. Here are highlights from that interview:

TVGuide.ca: Welcome back to The Young and the Restless, gorgeous! To say fans and critics are thrilled beyond belief that you have returned to reclaim what is rightfully yours in Genoa City is a gross understatement! It righted a big wrong…
Eileen Davidson
: Oh, thank you, Nelson! A few weeks ago, I taped three episodes all in one day opposite Peter Bergman [Jack], Beth Maitland [Traci], and Billy Miller [Billy]. It was awesome. We taped 11 scenes in two hours! Coming back was like putting on an old pair of shoes.

The Beautiful Eileen

TVG: Now that you’re back on contract with The Young and the Restless, I expect co-head writers Maria Arena Bell and Hogan Sheffer to write the heck out of Ashley Abbott. Why do you think other writing regimes have had difficulty writing for Ash?
ED: It never used to be like that. To be honest, I don’t know. [Conversely], on Days of our Lives, they couldn’t stop writing for me! Actually, when I returned the to Y&R the last time, I had a couple years of story. Kay Alden gave me that fabulous breast cancer storyline, which was awesome. Then there was a changing of the guard. But listen, I take some responsibility because I had a child, and my family became my priority. Not being on the front burner [wasn’t the end of the world] for me at that time.

But when my son turned three, I realized, “Oh [crap], no one has been minding Ashley’s store while I was off playing mommy.” When I snapped back into soap mode, it was too late; Ashley was written as a mean bitch and I felt like she got lost in the shuffle. Even her wardrobe began to resemble Cruella De Vil! I was like, “Where did Ashley’s sexy go? Remember when Ashley was fun?” I felt she became shrewish. Thankfully, The Bold and the Beautiful gave back to Ashley while I was over there. Hopefully that will translate onto The Young and the Restless. Maria remembers the old days, so…
