All My Children Hires Deaf Actor, Aims for Authenticity

To beef up the current Spike story line, All My Children has enlisted the assistance of J.Q. DePaiva. Only 10, this young actor is deaf in real life.

All My Children He's been hired to guest-star September 20, 21 and 24 in scenes that involve Kendall Hart (Alicia Minshew) and her child.

Fans of One Life to Live, meanwhile, should recognize the last name of this rising star. J.Q.’s parents are actors Kassie DePaiva (Blair, OLTL) and James DePaiva (Max, OLTL). Kassie will also lend her help to this All My Children angle.

Deaf at birth, J.Q. now wears permanent cochlear implants that enable him to hear sounds and blend in normally with other kids. Co-writers Barbara Esensten and James Harmon Brown said they are committed to infusing authenticity into this story of Kendall’s and Ryan’s child, who went deaf as a result of a car accident.

Spike will not experience the miracle of hearing instantaneously, said Brown, as they hope to build up the deafness as a challenge that profoundly, realistically affects those who love the boy.

Kendall Hart Blogs About Faith

Kendall Hart Photo Forget what Alicia Minshew thinks. All My Children fans wish to get inside the mind of her character, Kendall Hart.

Therefore, we present you with the Kendall Hart blog from Friday, entitled "Faith."

As nice as it was to get outside of the linoleum hallways and bad lighting in the hospital, I can't be far away from my babies. I know it's crazy, but I feel like if I'm not there every second something wrong will happen. I'm a mom, and my children need me there. I know it's a little irrational and completely sane all at the same time - I don't know. I usually have answer - most of the time it's the wrong one - but this time... with my sons...

I have no clue what I should be doing. Zach says all the right things (and he means them) to calm me down. Without him there is no way I could get through one minute of this torture. Maybe Zach's right... I can leave my sons for a little bit and have faith that everything will be okay...

What exactly is Kendall talking about? Catch up now with our All My Children episode guides.

Kelli Giddish to Exit All My Children

Kelli Giddish PhotoEmmy-nominated Kelli Giddish will exit the role of Di Henry later this year.

The actress was brought on as a possible recast of Dixie Martin, but the character languished without story for much of her time in All My Children.

As Soap Central reports, two years ago, Giddish took the show by storm. Her character was revealed - or rather believed - to be the supposedly-dead Dixie Martin. But that story line quickly fizzled and Giddish's character was relegated to the back burner.

Giddish's addition to the All My Children cast in March 2005 was met with mixed reviews. Fans were initially skeptical of a newcomer being hired to tackle the role of Dixie Martin. Adding to the controversy was the fact that Giddish is younger in real-life than Jacob Young, the actor who portrays the character that was supposed to be her on-screen son.

Still, viewers were taken by Giddish's on-screen performance. So were the actress' peers: Giddish received a Daytime Emmy pre-nomination for Outstanding Younger Actress in 2006.

But now she'll be leaving the show. We'll let you know her next destination.

Thorsten Kaye Talks About Changes on All My Children

Thorsten Kaye Pic Here are a few highlights from a recent interview Soap Opera Digest conducted with All My Children hunk, Thorsten Kaye...

On Soaps' Tendency to Rewrite History: "It's not unavoidable, but I think for an outsider coming in, it's a different way of working. You don't know what's coming and you don't necessarily know what comes before you because that changes. That's something that bothers me. I don't mind the ride, but there has to be a cornerstone, there has to be a history to someone.

If something was a lie for the last three years, that kind of gets me. That's why I left One Life to Live [where he played Patrick Thornhart from 1995-97], because they changed the past. And suddenly, you have no tools left."

On Disciplining Four-Year-Old Daughter McKenna
: "She'll do stuff that I have to tell her not to do, like throwing things in the air. It's terribly hard because our house is filled with cartoon art. I've got a big, eight-foot Chuck Jones bunny and one of the brooms from Fantasia and she doesn't understand why she can't play with them. They're cartoony and she's seen them on TV and so it's a little tough to explain."

On AMC's Transition From Ex-Head Writer Megan McTavish to the Head-Writing Team Of James Harmon Brown And Barbara Esensten: "If somebody else is coming in, it's like you're between coaches or something. You go, 'Let's just try to get through what has already been established by the last one.' We can't just completely stop it and come up with something else because whoever's coming in next will change it again. But I think over the next few weeks, it's all gonna change."
