Summary
The Emmy Award winning daytime drama The Young and the Restless debuted in 1973 with a story line focused on extravagance, exorbitant wealth, and business. Residing in Genoa City, the major players are the Abbotts, the Chancellors and the Newmans.
When it debuted, Young and the Restless storylines originally examined the domestic and professional lives of two core families in Genoa City: the wealthy Brooks and the poor Fosters.
After a series of casting changes and departures in the early 1980s, the show has focused more on the Abbotts and the Newmans, including the corporate rivalry between their two respective companies.
One basic plot that has run throughout almost all of Young and the Restless is the rivalry between Jill Foster Abbott and Katherine Chancellor.
The series was originally broadcast as half-hour episodes, five days a week. It was expanded to one-hour episodes on February 1, 1980.
The Young and the Restless is currently the highest-rated daytime drama on American television. As of 2006, it has appeared at the top of the weekly Nielsen Ratings in that category for more than 900 weeks since 1988.
It has won seven Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Drama Series.
