Get to Know a Soap Opera Star: Sabine Singh

Sabine Singh It's All My Children day on The Soap Dispenser!

We've heard from Colin Egglesfield and reported on two new hunks coming to town. Now, we give you insight into actress Sabine Singh...

  • She worked with Sir Ben Kingsley while studying at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
  • She played Martha Stewart's daughter in the TV-movie Martha Behind Bars. That one is hard to top!
  • Eight years ago, she was set up for a blind date with Cameron Mathison but the date never happened.

Here are some quotes co-stars have to say about Singh, as well:

"I'm just really glad they found the right person. I just taped my first scenes with her and I felt really good about them. I think people will really like Sabine."- Mathison, soapoperaweekly.com

"Sabine is putting her own take on Greenlee, not doing an imitation of Rebecca, which I really like, but she's got that same snappiness; she's gonna be a great bitch!"- Alicia Minshew, soapoperaweekly.com

Colin Egglesfield Speaks on Breaking into All My Children

Our friends over at BuddyTV recently caught up with Colin Egglesfield from All My Children. Here are excerpts from the interview...

When you first got All My Children, were you familiar with the show or the characters, and all the back story?
Yeah, what was funny, it's ironic, when I was growing up my mom used to watch All My Children every day. You know, my sister and her used to have it on, and so you know, as a kid, you know, playing around in the living room, it was always on. So I always kind of heard the names Erica Kane and Ted Martin and Adam Chandler. So I kind of knew a little bit about the soap.

Colin Egglesfield But you know, I never watched soaps growing up, and the only other soap that I even sort of watched was As the World Turns, because my college roommate used to watch it every day. And so I would come back from class and he would have it on, and I would just kind of sit there, you know, eating my lunch and watch it with him. So I kind of watched that a little bit, but no, I hadn't really watched it before getting on the show.

Then how do you prepare for something like that? Do you do a lot of research? Do you just hear stories about all the back story? Because there's a lot of plot going on in the back story of all these characters. And do you get caught up in that?
Yeah, what do I do, I pray a lot. It's… what do I do, it is a lot, you know. I felt, I definitely felt overwhelmed when I first got there, because it was just, the mountain of material we do everyday is just immense compared to any other form of, you know, acting that's out there.

We just we go through like 80 on average, about 80 pages a day, so you've very little time to rehearse. Very little time to, you know, just kind of investigate and find out what is going on in the scene. So you're, you know, forced to improvise and just come up with stuff very quickly. And it's usually through rehearsal where you find that certain things make the scene go better, or find out certain things about your character.

And because you cannot afford that luxury, you just kind of have to, you know, wing it at certain times. And then of course, coming out in the show with really not knowing your character is, it's just, it took a while for me to kind of figure who Josh Madden is and why he does the things that he does.

And before you know it, you know, along the past two years they would kind of, you know, make up stories as it goes along to make it fit into the storyline. They wanted me to kidnap this girl I was in love with, and you know, fly this airplane and crash on this deserted island. So they just made up that when I was nine years old, my father made me take pilot's lessons, so I had my pilot's license.

You know, so, little things like that where you just kind of, you would never have known about when you first started, you just find out as the character and the story progresses. So yeah, sometimes it's frustrating, sometimes it's pretty funny, but the great thing about it is it's always something different, it always keeps you on your toes

You mentioned earlier about your mother and sister watching, and hearing the name Erica Kane. And now she's your mother, and how is it playing the character who's the son of such an iconic figure in the world of soaps?

You know it's tough, because she's so iconic and she's just, she's just someone who is revered. And just to me, you know, Erica Kane. Whenever you think of soaps, I always thought of Erica Kane, and to me she's like daytime royalty. So when I first got on the show I was definitely nervous to work with her, and you just want to make sure that you're prepared.

And that you, that you are able to bring whatever you need to in order for them to, you know, the other actors and especially Susan Lucci to respect you and want to work with you. And so in the beginning was definitely a little challenging because I didn't know what I was definitely doing, because it just takes a while to get comfortable with the way they shoot, with the four camera setup and the technical movements and that sort of thing.

But the great thing with working with Susan was that she was so welcoming and so friendly, and kind of just took me under her wing and just showed me certain things. And if she could tell I wasn't really comfortable or sure about a certain thing she would, she would show me or tell me or, you know, just kind of guide me in the right direction. Because working so quickly, the directors only had so much time to kind of tell you what to do or what you need around the scene that needs to be played.

And so she was, yeah, she was great. She still is great with regards to, with all that stuff. And now that we've worked together for a while, I feel like it's fun, because the way they've written our characters is such that it's very similar to a real mother-son relationship. In the sense that that she definitely cares about me and loves me, but at the same time is protective and wants to help me, so at times I feel like she's overstepping her bounds.

And I want to, you know, push back, so we kind of have this push-pull love-hate relationship at times, which is fun to play, so.

Kassie DePaiva Dishes on Fans, One Life to Live Co-Stars

Ask Kassie DePaiva the difference between fans of prime time or movie actors, versus those that support soap opera stars, and you'll get the following, passionate response:

"Daytime fans are like country fans. They are very specific and extremely loyal. They believe in us. They read about us in magazines. They know about our personal lives as well as our character’s lives. They’re invested emotionally."

Kassie DePaiva

Kassie DePaiva is grateful for all her fans.

DePaiva said as much to Merle Goldberg of Soapdom. The writer talked to the One Life to Live actress prior to this year's Daytime Emmy Awards.

For every ten women in the audience, there was probably one man, although Kassie said she "didn’t even notice that." But the statistic didn't surprise her. Because women are the ones who are home most of the time, DePaiva thinks "they relate to the fantasies of the daytime dramas. If my character can help them forget about some of their worries... it’s all fun and soap watchers realize the reality is not what it is.

They appreciate it, embrace it, and most of all want to share in the celebration of it.”

The week before the Emmys, DePaiva was in Nashville singing her heart out. Many people in the audience had no idea she toiled in daytime. She's got a whole crop of new fans who appreciate not only her music, but hopefully her acting ability.

DePaiva loves to perform on stage and in front of the camera. She wants to be appreciated, especially by people who not only love the soap opera characters, but embrace what they do in their personal lives and personal endeavors.

Goldberg said enjoyed her time with the actress behind Blair Cramer. In show-life, she said the search is on for Todd. The pair will be reunited, but how that happens is unclear since One Life to Live had a new head writer at the time of the interview.

But what about dressing roomate, Renee Goldsberry? Is she leaving or not?

“I don’t know. I don’t think that that’s definite. But, I think that Evangeline’s a prominent character. Renee is a prominent force in the cast and I totally adore her. Everyone does.

She wants a two-year contract. The show wants her for four. I don’t blame them, but at the same time I don’t blame her. She’s got a viable career that she wants to establish and she’s young enough to do it. I hope she comes back because I miss her. She’s my touchstone and she’s my buddy."

The Bold and the Beautiful Frequently Asked Questions

Ronn Moss Even the most astute fans of The Bold and The Beautiful may not know every piece of trivia about the show.

Thanks to Soap Opera Weekly, however, you can at least have the following burning questions answered:

Q: Is it true that Ronn Moss (Ridge) had a career as a musician before the show?
YES. Years before Moss originated the role of Ridge, he was a member of the rock band Player, which had a No. 1 hit single with "Baby, Come Back" in 1978. Moss has since gone solo; he still records CDs and goes on regular concert tours.

Q: What is the name of the fashion magazine that Bill Spencer (Ridge's former father-in-law) owns and is still seen from time to time on air?
Eye On Fashion.

Q: How did Brooke's parents end up in Paris?
Kristen and her family now reside in LA. FYI: it's been mentioned on-air during one of Kristen's returns that Tony's health is just fine.

Marcy Rylan Speaks on Guiding Light Change, Storylines

What does Marcy Rylan think about some of the recent changes on Guiding Light?

Soap Opera Weekly recently sat down with this soap opera actress to find out...

Marcy RylanSoap Opera Weekly: Tom Pelphrey popped up for a few episodes the week of July 30. Were you bummed you didn't get any Jonathan or Sarah scenes?
Marcy Rylan: Oh, I can't even tell you! Lizzie was pregnant for nine months, so I got a little attached to the fake belly and I've gotten a little possessive of the baby. When Lizzie gave birth, Tammy (Stephanie Gatschet) held the baby before I did! I was so upset. I was like, "Are you guys insane? I carried this baby for nine months!" So, yes, when the baby came back and I did not see the baby, and I didn't see Jonathan, it was infuriating.

There's this little video of baby Sarah and Jonathan floating around and causing some problems [for Reva]. I was on set and they were playing the video for the actors who were waiting to do a scene about it. I was waiting to do a different scene but I was sitting there watching the video and in my next scene I had to cry — and it was so easy! (bursts into fake sobs)

Weekly: Do you hope her story continues with her finding out her baby isn't dead?
Rylan: That day, they better be scared! Even if the writers write the sweetest words, I am going to find a way to be like, "YOU'VE BEEN HIDING MY BABY FROM ME!" I really want Lizzie to find out from someone in town and for everyone to be very scared. Lizzie is going to be very upset.

Weekly: Especially at Reva, who got her drunk and tattooed, right?
Rylan: There was a scene a couple of weeks ago where Lizzie thought that Jonathan and Sarah were alive. She ran into the hotel room and she was calling out for Jonathan and Sarah. Reva came in, and Jonathan and Sarah had been there, and Reva lied to Lizzie's face. When the scene was over, I said, "This is sick! This is so sick!" and Kim Zimmer (Reva) was like, "I'm so sorry."

Weekly: Luckily, Lizzie looks to be getting a new and unexpected pal in Billy.
Rylan: Yeah, I'm excited! I had an idea that I had a new partner coming up, and of course, you think "love interest." Then I realized, "It's Billy! That's not what I expected!" But I'm excited that this is the way they are taking Lizzie now. I'm glad that they're really taking their time, because sometimes with soaps you'll lose the baby and a month later it's like the baby never existed. You're totally fine and you're dating. We have a lot of moms at home watching.

I've received a lot of e-mails about what it's like to lose a child. I'm glad that they didn't just gloss over it and keep going. So I was really excited when I saw that this was a totally different, totally unexpected change in storyline for Lizzie.

Weekly: What do you think draws the two of them together?
Rylan: Part of what I think is the draw to Lizzie and Billy is that they've both had problems, and they can bond and not feel sorry for each other. But also, there's Billy's daughter, Mindy Lewis. I don't remember if it's to Soap Opera Weekly, but fans have written in to see if Krista Tesreau (ex-Mindy) and I are related.
