Get to Know a Soap Opera Star: Anthony Geary

Anthony Geary has merely won the second most Daytime Emmy Awards of all-time.

So most fans probably think they know this long-time, respected actor quite well. While they may be correct, here are a few fun, fast facts about the General Hospital star that may surprise you:

  • Anthony GearyHe co-starred with Sid Caesar and Imogene Coca at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas.
  • Takex pride in claiming to be the world's oldest hip-hop dancer.
  • His regretx in life? Not finishing school and not getting a Ph.D. in theater.
  • He received a Cindy Award as a producer for the drama Sound of Sunshine, Sound of Rain, a children's story for public radio.

Finally, the man who make Luke such a well-known character does hope to be remember not just for this one role. As he said in 1999:

I guarantee you, in my obituary, it will say, 'Tony Geary — Luke on General Hospital — died today.' That was really hard for me, because my whole reason for being an actor, my whole dream about it, was that I'd have an opportunity to dissolve into a million personalities. So what I've done instead is I've refused to let Luke be anything but a million different personalities.

If I must play him, then he must serve me, as well. So long as I live, he will not be a sofa cushion.

Judith Chapman: Excited About Restuarant Face-Lift

Judith Chapman is is excited about an Italian face-lift this summer... for her restaurant in Palm Springs, that is!

"After 25 years, my man James figured he could redecorate, so the old St. James is closed and we're opening a brand-new, fabulous restaurant, Vineyard Tuscany Grill," Chapman told Soap Opera Digest. "It's the same location, but we're transforming it."

Judith Chapman The first change will be the look.

"Though St. James wasn't an India restaurant, it had an India ashram look," Chapman said. "We're replacing the arches and fountains, and transforming it into a Tuscan villa. I haven't been home for three weeks, but James has already started the renovations, so I'll be pestering him. 'I think we should do it this way!' "

The long-time The Young and the Restless actress is sure to have an opinion on the food, too, but doesn't anticipate having any objections to the new menu.

"We're in business with the Italians!" she cheers. "We're going into partnership with Chef Mario Marfia, who worked for Robert De Niro's restaurant Ago and other fabulous places in Los Angeles, and the front man of Ago South Beach, Davide (Alessandrini). Mario's from Sicily and Davide's from Sardinia. It's our favorite food and it's going to be brilliant."

The best thing about the partnership is that Chapman will have more time with her man.

"James hasn't been in the kitchen for a long time, but he oversees everything," she said. "Now, he wants to slowly move to the background while someone else takes over, so we can spend more time together, with less of the headaches and responsibilities of day-to-day management and just relax."

After a quarter of a century, he's already getting started. "I just called him and he was at Mario's tiny restaurant in Palm Desert," Chapman said. "I said, 'It sounds like a wonderful life,' and he said, 'Oh, it is!' "

"He probably got in trouble for doing it.” Alderson said.

James Reynolds Returns to Days of Our Lives

James Reynolds returned to work at the Days of Our Lives studio on July 17, nearly two months after undergoing heart valve replacement surgery at a Pasadena hospital on May 24.

The actor talked to Soap Opera Digest abou the emergency operation and how it changed his life...

Soap Opera Weekly: So how are you feeling post-surgery?
James Reynolds: I'm feeling better than my old self. There was a nurse at the hospital the last few days I was there. She had gone through the same procedure. She actually gave me some great advice on what to expect in the coming weeks and how to deal with certain things. She said, "It's like your body is being rebooted. It's all new again." That's exactly what's happening.

James ReynoldsWeekly: What exactly went down? It seemed like it all happened so quickly. No one even knew you were ill.
Reynolds: Well, there was no pre-news. It was that fast. I had known that I had a heart murmur. My doctors found it about two years ago; my asthma doctor discovered it and sent me to a cardiologist. It turned out that what my asthma doctor thought was a heart murmur was actually a deteriorating valve. I was born with a bicuspid valve. Most people have three valves in their heart that blood passes through. One in 50 men are born with two valves instead of three.

It's not a big major problem unless one develops arterial stenosis, which is what I had. At that point, the diagnosis was that it wasn't very serious. So I could pretty much go on and live my life. We were going to check it every year.

Weekly: So the condition deteriorated by the time of your next yearly checkup?
Reynolds: Yes. I went in for a checkup a year later, and the doctor asked for a whole battery of tests. The last one was an angiogram. Afterward, the doctor approached me with a surgeon. They both said, "Look, you really can't leave the hospital. Your valve has deteriorated to such a point that it's weakened your heart horribly."

Weekly: How quickly was surgery scheduled from that point?
Reynolds: Well, I saw the doctors on a Wednesday and had surgery that Friday. I had no time to think, which was a blessing. I really approached this with no apprehension and very little concern at all. It was so fast that my attention had to fly to my responsibilities. I had to take care of issues like working on the show, things I had to do for my family. That was where all of my attention was focused. It didn't allow me a lot of time to put any attention on the upcoming heart surgery.

Weekly: And since Abe was about to have a corneal transplant on Days of Our Lives, arranging time off for your surgery coincided perfectly.
Reynolds: It did. In a lot of ways it couldn't have worked out better. There certainly may have been times, as far as the show was concerned, when it would have been less of a possibility for me to go into the hospital. At this moment it turned out to work well for both the character and me.

Weekly: What was the recovery process like?
Reynolds: I was in the ICU for 10 days. Then, I was in the hospital for another week after I was out of the ICU. It was a long haul. I've got to say, though, that the nurses and the doctors were just fantastic. Everyone did everything they could to make my stay as comfortable as possible.

Weekly: What's been the prognosis since the surgery?
Reynolds: My checkups have all gone very well. I seem to have come through it pretty well. The surgeon said I got off the heart/lung machine faster than anybody he's ever had. I was fortunate — the doctors mentioned this a couple times — that I kept myself in good shape. I worked out a lot throughout my life. I'm not a smoker. I don't drink to excess. I wasn't overweight. All those things that give [people] problems. I felt good about that.

Weekly: You must have created quite a stir at the hospital with all your visiting Days of Our Lives castmates.
Reynolds: Oh, yeah. There were some folks that came in to visit, although I'm not going to go into naming them. The minute they left, my room was packed from people from the hospital. "Oh! That was so-and-so. How are they doing? Are you going to have a storyline with them?" It was great.

Rick Springfield to Rock Out on General Hospital

For the first time ever on General Hospital, actor and musician Rick Springfield will sing on air.

Rick Springfield On Friday, August 24 Springfield will perform the song “Who Killed Rock ‘n Roll?” from his upcoming album, due for release in early 2008. In addition, national non-profit LIFEbeat will be incorporated into the concert storyline to educate the audience on the real-life charitable organization that works with the music industry and those affected by HIV/AIDS.

As has been developing in a popular General Hospital storyline, Dr. Noah Drake (Springfield), his son, Dr. Patrick Drake (Jason Thompson), and Dr. Robin Scorpio (Kimberly McCullough) tell hospital patient and rock star Eli Love (Springfield in a dual role) that he needs emergency surgery and must cancel his appearance in a charity concert benefiting LIFEbeat.

Enter Anna Devane (Finola Hughes), who quickly devises a plan to transform Noah Drake into the musician so that the show can go on as scheduled.

“We love to find new, fun ways to keep the genre fresh, and this story fits nicely into that plan - good story and a fun ride. To boot, we are happy to partner with LIFEbeat in their mission to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS,” saiad Brian Frons, president, Daytime, Disney-ABC Television Group.
