Walt Willey: Soap Operas are in Trouble!

All My Children star Walt Willey recently blogged about the trouble facing daytime dramas.

Here's a bit of what he has to say:

"I think soaps as we know them are in trouble. The days when 'daytime' was the “cash cow” for news and sports are well gone. With so many people back in the workforce, not many people can watch the show in 'real time'. We know people watch on VCR and DVR and even on Soapnet, but our advertisers know that we fast-forward through the commercials, so our rate card drops and revenue goes away.

Wonderful Walt Willey

These shows are expensive to produce and we need to find a way to keep them on the air, hence all the pay cuts you’ve heard about. We have all taken a cut to help as best we can.

The soap needs to be re-imagined, deconstructed and put back together in a format in which we can survive these hard times."

Do you agree with Willey?

Billy Miller also chimed in on the storyline:

"Billy is a selfish schtupper, and Chloe is a selfish psycho. But selfish people make for good drama."

Sharon Case Dishes on Nick and Sharon

As fans of The Young and the Restless know, Nick and Sharon recenty made love in the cabin.

Was Sharon Case, the actress that plays one half of this couple, excited about that development? To quote Sarah Palin: you bet'cha!

Sharon, The Young and the Restless

Here's what Case said to Michael Fairman about the angle:

I loved the storyline because it has so much conflict in it. I can speak for the actors that nobody wanted to see Nick and Sharon get back together and live happily ever after in one episode. Our audience wants to see them together, and so do we, but not all in one episode. It misses the point.

I love that Nick and Sharon slept together and they are playing Sharon and Nick’s feelings for each other. Because for years, where was Sharon and Nick’s feelings for each other? Why weren’t they ever in the same room with each other? What happened? Well, we are back, and that does not mean Sharon and Nick should get together tomorrow, but we should be in the same room together, because there is conflict.

In my opinion, this is what should have been playing out all along.

Dylan Patton to Debut on Days of Our Lives

This Friday, Dylan Patton will step into the role of Will on Days of Our Lives.

The character returns this week after spending an extended trip away from home with his Aunt Carrie and Uncle Austin.

Dylan Patton

"Dylan's playing the same age Lucas was when I first came on the show. I like him. He's a very good actor and an earthy, rugged dude," said Bryan Datillo in a statement released via Soap Opera Weekly.

Will was last seen in November 2007, when he was played by actor Christopher Gerse.

Rachel Melvin Addresses Days of Our Lives Exit, Rumors

Rachel Melvin is leaving Days of Our Lives.

Why? That's exactly what the actress wants to make clear to her fans.

"I have to admit that I'm kind of disappointed in some of the rumors I've been hearing in regards to my decision to leave," Melvin wrote on her official website. "People have gone so far as to speculate that I'm leaving because I 'wasn't getting my way' with storylines, or that I was 'disappointed with the way the show was going.'"

At the Emmys

The actress continued:

"I understand our show has had to sacrifice many things and has been forced to take tremendous amounts of cutbacks, which have greatly altered the way we operate. But to clear the air about the other rumor, my leaving has nothing to do with the current status of the show or my current limited amount of airtime."

Meanwhile, Days of Our Lives Executive Producer Ken Corday said: "We're not recasting the character," but noted that "the door is open any time" if Melvin ever wants to return.
