The Inside Suicide Story on The Bold and the Beautiful

William deVry PhotoTypically, soap operas stay away from suicide.

But The Bold and the Beautiful went there on April 28, when Storm Logan (William deVry, pictured) blew his brains out so his heart could be donated to his dying sister, Katie (Heather Tom). Talk about generous!

"It was a hard decision, but the aftermath of Storm's death is some of the finest work we've ever done," said The Bold and the Beautiful executive producer Brad Bell to TV Guide. "It's a decision I don't regret."

Naturally, Storm's siblings consider his actions heroic; all except for Katie, that is.

"She's furious that he sacrificed his life for her," Tom said. "They wrote an incredible fantasy scene [airing May 14] where Katie actually confronts Storm. Usually, when the living talk to the dead on soaps, it's touchy-feely. This is a big, horrible argument."

One Life to Live dealt with suicide in 2003, when Keri leapt from a roof, but that was only revealed in court well after her death. The Bold and the Beautiful  hit it head-on, which worried Tom.

"It's dangerous to find any glory or honor in suicide, but the writers have allowed it to be ugly," she said. "They gave it the weight it deserves."

Soap Opera Stars Take Hiatus

A pair of soap opera stars are taking the summer off:

- Anthony Geary starts his summer vacation a bit earlier than most of when he takes off until fall next week. His character of Luke bids farewell to General Hospital, as Geary is heading to his house in The Netherlands for a well-earned vacation.

- Michael Graziadei (Daniel, The Young and the Restless), meanwhile, is only off for six week to film a movie, The Reef. He'll come back in July.

Days of Our Lives: What Does the Future Hold?

Entertainment Weekly, in its Soap Watch column, asks a pertinent question this week:

What do the four acting nods Days of Our Lives earned for this year's Emmy Awards - a surprise after snubs in recent years - mean for the show's uncertain future at NBC?

NBC Daytime wouldn't comment specifically on whether the Emmy nominations — for lead actor (Thaao Penghlis), supporting actress (Judi Evans), younger actress (Rachel Melvin), and younger actor (Darin Brooks), all of whom are pictured below — have improved the show's chances of remaining as the network's last daytime drama.

Still, this silence doesn't mean network brass hasn't taken notice of its soap opera's raised Emmy profile.

''It's just really nice to have the show be recognized, since it's been a little bit of a drought,'' said Bruce Evans, who as senior vice president, current series, oversees NBC's daytime division.

Guiding Light: Renewed!

Television's longest-running program will live to celebrate its 72nd anniversary.

CBS announced recently that it had picked up Guiding Light for the 2009 TV season, despite the show's sagging ratings. The series, of course, debuted a new production model earlier this year, much to the chagrin of critics.

Here are a series of recently-published Guiding Light photos in honor of this announcement:

James Reynolds Speaks on Theater Ownership

James Reynolds, the man in charge of the town of Salem on Days of Our Lives, was recently interviewed by Tulsa World.

The article focuses on Reynolds' real life ownership of a theater. He and his wife, actress Lissa Layng, are the owners and operators of the Fremont Centre Theatre in South Pasadena, California.

James Reynolds

As many soap actors will tell you, their daytime gig is a full-time job. So, what made James decide to open the Fremont?

“I’ve actually run a number of theaters over time. This is the fifth or sixth theater I’ve run. When you do television and film, it’s great to have theater to go back to. It sort of grounds you,” he said.
