In the Soap Opera Spotlight: Ilene Kristen

Ilene Kristen has appeared on One Life to Live since 2001. The actress was dropped to recurring status in 2004, but said at the time:

"I can't let Roxy die. I love working here. The show is good to recurring characters."

Kristen, Ilene

We agree. Here are a few interesting facts about the One Life to Live star:

  • Kristen's first One Life to Life stint — as a mechanic named Georgina — lasted three months.
  • In the late 1970s, she produced a 30-minute film starring Karen Allen called The Aftermath.
  • Kristen has never married; she split from fiancé Brian Sheridan in late 2007.
  • It wasn't until 1971 when Kristen was appearing in the film Preacherman that she changed her last name from Schatz. The name was recommended by a director after several people told her she looked Swedish.
  • During her junior year of high school, she traveled with a comedy troupe called The Six New Happenings.

John Brotherton Discusses Role on One Life to Live

John Brotherton Picture TV Guide Canada describes John Brotherton as "Llanview’s hottest con man since Tuc Watkins."

The publication recently caught up with the One Life to Live star. Here are highlights from the interview:

TVGuide.ca: Where did you come from? Who the hell is John Brotherton? I don’t think I’ve been this excited about a One Life to Live newcomer since Jessica Tuck [ex-Megan].
John Brotherton: Wow — thank you. I appreciate all your support you’ve given me over the past few months. I’m a Northwestern boy — I’ve lived in Seattle and Portland all my life. I was a business kid all through college, and once I graduated, I jumped in my car and moved to L.A.

Once I got my dream business internship, I realized as much as I was good at what I did in the corporate world, it wasn’t my passion. I was a theatre minor throughout school but it was more of a hobby because everyone in my family are artists. So I thought, why not make my hobby and passion my profession? That was 2003 — I was in L.A. for four years before I got my big break on One Life to Live.

TVG: I love your chemistry with Bree Williamson [Jessica] and Forbes March [Nash] — you guys could be the next Three Musketeers on daytime.
JB: They’re amazing — I hope the show explores that storyline more too. Jared’s one busy guy!

The Leven Rambin Fashion Diary

Leven Rambin PictureLeven Rambin was asked to pen a diary for Paper Mag, a fashion publication, during New York's Fashion Week.

Here's an excerpt from it:

FRIDAY, FEB. 1
Fashion Week has kicked off on a gloomy day! It is raining torrentially and the dark sky attempts to dampen my excited mood. Hoping that this atmospheric misfortune was not a sign of days to come, I steadfastly tromp through puddle after frigid puddle in my beautiful hot pink and silver Giuseppe Zanotti pumps.

Luckily those babies held up for me quite nicely as did my recently straightened locks. Fortunately, I am headed to the Nicole Miller show inside the tents, immediately followed by the radiant, hypnotic Erin Fetherson show, also in the tents.

As the World Turns Producer Responds to Nuke Complaints

When As the World Turns initially outed the character of Luke (Van Hansis) gay activists were excited. This story line provided the potential to prominent feature a homosexual on a popular soap opera.

Since then, however, many viewers have been dismayed at how the show has seemingly shied away from furthering the relationship between Luke and Noah (aka "Nuke"). The pair has only been featured in 12 of 53 episodes between November 1 and January 18.

When asked via email if the show was treating Luke and Noah fairly, Brian T. Cahill, Sr - V.P., Managing Director for TeleVest Daytime Programs, the person responsible for the overall production of As the World Turns and Guiding Light - replied:

“We are always pleased when our stories strike a chord with the audience and the Luke and Noah story has certainly done that. We appreciate all the feedback we’ve gotten from fans of the show, and we recognize the popularity of this couple.

“As soap opera fans know, daytime is a cyclical medium, where storylines vary in screen time. As with all the characters on the show, Luke and Noah are sometimes featured more heavily than other times. For instance, in July, August and September, they were on-air quite a bit.

Fans will be seeing more of Luke and Noah in the coming weeks and months, as their story gets more air time.”

Can You Find the Real Susan Lucci?

Cameron Mathison has a challenge in front of him:

Can he distinguish between the real Susan Lucci and the wax figure of his All My Children co-star?

The pair are seen here at Madame Tussauds in New York City. Can you spot the imposter?

Susan Lucci and... Susan Lucci?

More on Changes to Come on Guiding Light

As previously reported, Guiding Light will be breaking soap opera barriers at the end of this month.

On February 29, viewers will be treated to a brand-new look to the show's daily episodes. There will be no more archaic, three-walled sets. Instead, the show will utilize permanent four-walled sets with ten-foot high ceilings.

gl.jpg Also gone are the 300-pound pedestal cameras, all of which will be replaced with handheld eight-pound mini-cameras.

"Soap operas have been shot, by and large, the same way since the 1950's, the same way 'I Love Lucy' was shot - with pedestal cameras, in just a few interior sets," Executive Producer Ellen Wheeler said. "Our audience is sophisticated enough to understand that's old-fashioned, and it isn't working for them anymore."

What's the advantages of these changes? They will help cut down on costs and will give viewers the opportunity to experience the different spaces that the characters inhibit, thereby increasing storytelling potential and intimacy with the characters.

"Our fans want to see more of our character's lives - from the houses they live in, to the cars they drive, to the experiences they have in their everyday lives," Wheeler said. Her and her co-production executives have even let their office spaces be used for filming.
